It’s not often that you find a rapper who started their music career in a church choir. But this is the case for Brooklyn artist, Tony Banks, who is releasing his new beat-fuelled single ‘Run!’
It wasn’t long before Tony was penning his own lyrics and creating beats at the age of 15. In the years after, he was rarely outside of the recording studio, honing his craft and finding a sound that lies somewhere between dance, rap, hip-hop and house.
Acts like Andre 3000, Missy Elliot and Michael Jackson have helped Tony mold this style that differentiates him from his counterparts in the urban music industry. For many years, this section of the music world has been typically associated with a ‘straight’ image, but this is something that Banks is aiming to address, destroying the preconceptions.
As part of the LGBT community, Tony’s brand of ‘move ya feet, feel good’ music touches on notions of sexuality, yet it also comes into contact with the tumultuous political world we currently live in, particularly so in his new single, ‘Run!’.
